Coin Cabinet, LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur
The coin cabinet at the LWL Museum has its roots in the 19th century. The "Verein für vaterländische Geschichte und Altertumskunde Westfalens" (Society for the History and Antiquity of Westphalia) was founded in 1825 as a result of the general interest in history among the middle classes. The establishment of its own collection of antiquities was part of the association's activities from the very beginning and it was mainly coins that found their way into this young collection as gifts.
